Mysterious fluids from Ferrotec

Ferrofluids are a unique class of material. A ferrofluid is a stable colloidal suspension of sub-domain magnetic nano particles in a liquid carrier. The particles, which have an average size of about 100? (10 nm), are coated with a stabilizing dispersing agent (surfactant) which prevents particle agglomeration even when a strong magnetic field gradient is applied to the ferrofluid.

Audio ferrofluids are based on two classes of carrier liquid: synthetic hydrocarbons and esters. Both oils possess very low volatility and high thermal stability. The choice of fluid is dictated by the environmental considerations of the application (e.g. humidity, adhesives, whether contacting with water, solvent vapors and reactive gases) combined with the best balance of magnetization and viscosity values to optimize the acoustical performance.
APG 800 Series Audio Ferrofluid
APG 800 Series Audio Ferrofluid
Ferrotec’s APG 800 Series ferrofluids are primarily used for damping and heat transfer in moderate temperature environments. The fluids can be exposed to temperature transients of up to 175°C, but to ensure longer life, operation above 110°C for extended periods should be minimized. APG 800 series ferrofluids are durable under high humidity and in contact with water.
APG 1100 Series Audio Ferrofluid
APG 1100 Series Audio Ferrofluid
Ferrotec’s APG 1100 Series ferrofluids are suitable for heat transfer and damping in moderate to high temperature environments. Although the fluids can withstand temperature transients of up to 200°C, to ensure long term reliability, operation above 125°C for extended periods should be minimized. APG 1100 series ferrofluids are durable under high humidity and in contact with water.

Ferrotec’s APG 2100 Series ferrofluids are suitable for heat transfer and damping in high temperature environments. Although the fluids can withstand temperature transients of up to 225°C, to ensure long term reliability, operation above 140°C for extended periods should be minimized. APG 2100 series ferrofluids are durable under high humidity and in contact with water.
Preparation?Dilution
P-series ferrofluid can be used as it is, however diluting it with an appropriate liquid is effective in some applications. P-0601 can be used by diluting it with the enclosed dilution liquid and P-0701 and P-0801 should be diluted with ion exchange water or distilled water. The dilution rate depends upon the specimen and application. Tap water may affect P-0701 and P-0801 and deteriorate the ferrofluids. In case of dilution, take out only necessary amount of ferrofluid from the bottle, then dilute it.

Applying?Observation
Apply a ferrofluid onto the specimen in a thin layer with a glass road, a brush, an applicator or a sponge. Or, dip the specimen into the ferrofluid directly. After the ferrofluid evaporates, a magnetic pattern on the specimen can be observed by naked eyes or under microscope. Technical information for typical applying and observation is available. P-series easily evaporates. Tighten the bottle cap after use and keep it at room temperature.
